Cheadle Royal - Young People's Services
Our Young People's Service, based at Cheadle Royal Hospital, offers a comprehensive mental health inpatient service for young people aged between 13 and 18 years.
'Orchard' is a 15-bedded open facility that offers multi-disciplinary inpatient care for young people with a variety of mental health problems, where they are unable to be appropriately cared for at home. Young people will be referred by their local child or adult community mental health team and will have conditions such as eating disorders, mood disorders, psychotic illnesses or behaviours suggestive of emergent personality disorders.
'Meadows' is a 12-bedded PICU (psychiatric intensive care unit) which offers placements for young people with mental health presentations whose current level of risk to themselves or others is such that they require care in a secure environment. All young people admitted to The Meadows would be detained under a 'section' of the Mental Health Act (1983).
'Woodlands', a low secure therapeutic rehabilitation service, offers care to 11 young people with complex needs who require a longer term therapeutic intervention within an inpatient setting. This new service complements the existing 'open acute' (Orchard) and 'intensive care' (Meadows) services by further enhancing the 'seamless' care pathway.
A cohesive team of specialist multi-disciplinary staff work seamlessly across the two inpatient services so as to maximise engagement with young people and to minimise the time that a young person might need to spend in both secure care and inpatient care as a whole. We provide a broad therapeutic programme including Family Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Music Therapy, Art Therapy and Pharmacotherapy. At all times our service designs individualised care plans and acivity programmes for each young person and also tries to recognise the needs not only of the young person but of their family. Our substantive, multi-disciplinary team has amassed a depth of skills that that are not easily gained through sessional work. We are proud of the quality of care we provide.
We have excellent educational and IT facilities which are staffed by three full time teachers and a teaching assistant, to enable young people to continue their education while they are resident in the Young People's Service, to minimise disruption to their education and to enable young people to achieve their future aspirations. We are members of QNIC (Quality Network for Inpatient Child and Adolescent Services) with whom we participate in annual peer-reviewed audits.
Our services are open to both males and females
